Comedian and television star Amy Schumer has teamed up with Patricia Arquette, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and a powerful creative team to release an hilarious sketch that highlights Hollywood sexism.
The clip, which aired during the season three premier of Inside Amy Schumer, sees Schumer meet her heroes in the middle of celebrations for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ “Last F***able Day”. Julia Louis-Dreyfus explains to Schumer that the day comes for every actress that “the media decides when you finally reach the point where you’re not believably f***able any more.”
The three women give examples and elaborate for Schumer as she tries to get her head around this concept and how people figure it out.
“Nobody really overtly tells you but there are signs,” Tina Fey says.
“Like, you know how Sally Field was Tom Hanks’ love interest in Punchline and then like twenty minutes later she was his mom in Forrest Gump?”
Interestingly, the sketch has caught the attention of a wide range of media publications, including The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal and The Hollywood Reporter as well as online news sources like BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Nicole Holofcener said the shoot was both fun and stressful, with much of the script ending up improvised by the four women.
“After doing the scene a million times I think it sort of got to me. This sketch is funny, but it’s funny because it’s so tragically true,” she says.
“The fact that Amy can be so challenging and political while being shamelessly hilarious is her true genius. It’s not stupid humour, it’s humour that really shows us who we are and how insanely screwed up our culture is.”
Comedy Central has just renewed Inside Amy Schumer for a fourth season. You can watch it in Australia on Foxtel’s Comedy Channel or via the Foxtel Play streaming service.
