Guy Sebastian Named Australian Eurovision Song Contest Artist
SBS has announced Guy Sebastian as the Australian representative who will compete in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
This is the first time an Aussie has ever competed in the popular event, with Eurovision including the non-European country as part of its 60th Anniversary celebrations. The organisers announced the Australian inclusion on 11th February 2015, saying our representative artist would go through to the finals held in Vienna on 26th May.
While SBS has been campaigning for more involvement in the contest for years, the inclusion in this year’s line up gave Australian organisers around a month to find and confirm the competing artist. Initial rumours had artists like Jessica Mauboy and Kylie Minogue pegged for the honour, before deciding on Guy Sebastian.
SBS Managing director Michael Ebeid has said in a press release that he’s proud to have Sebastian representing Australia after “a four year journey to achieve this ambition”.
“As an accomplished artist who has achieved global success, Guy’s vocal talents are unrivalled and he has the experience, maturity and strength of character to represent us in this competition,” he says.
“Australians love to compete, and we wanted to find someone who we can all believe in and get behind, and Guy is the perfect artist to represent Australia and SBS on the world’s stage.”
Sebastian is also no stranger to competition – he came into the public eye as a competitor on the first ever season of Australia Idol in 2003, which he ultimately won. He has gone on to release 8 studio albums with Sony Music Entertainment Australia, with accumulated sales in excess of 4.5 million units.
The Eurovision Song Contest organisers say that Sebastian’s performance “will be an incredible opportunity to introduce Guy to European audiences”, and notes that more details (including the song choice) will be announced in the following weeks.
Meanwhile, Sebastian himself says he is honoured to get the gig.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be given the opportunity to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest,” he says.
“It is the biggest music event in the world with an amazing history and tradition and I’m truly honoured to be invited to represent Australia in its first time ever in the competition.”
Guy Sebastian was announced as the competing artist in a press event at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday 5th March 2015, with the actual song announcement set for 16th March.
