Daniel Johns Lines Up First Solo Performances
After eight years of silence, Australian musician Daniel Johns is taking back the stage in a very big way.
The former Silverchair frontman has just released a solo EP, Aerial Love – which has already reached #1 on the iTunes since it’s release on Friday, 13th March. As well as doing the media and social media rounds, he has now announced his first lot of performances at some very major events.
Johns will kick off his new music performances at the APRA Awards in Sydney on Tuesday, 24th of March, with a live version of single Preach. He’s also just announced performances at the Sydney Opera House in May as part of the Vivid Festival.
In an email newsletter to his fans, Johns says the latter performances will showcase his whole new sound and perspective on music.
“I’ve spent years working on this new album so what better way to send it out into the world than by playing all those songs live for the first time at the Sydney Opera House. I’m both really looking forward to it and totally scared to death.”
For the APRA Awards, on the other hand, Johns leads a lineup that includes music icons such as Jimmy Barnes, Diesel, Lisa Mitchell, Kingswood and M-Phazes. Johns himself has been awarded Songwriter of the Year three times and in 2008 the song Straight Lines, written by Johns and Julian Hamilton, won Song of the Year and Most Played Australian Work APRA Awards.
While Johns came into the public eye for the gritty, rebellious rock songs of Silverchair, his new work is more experimental, with Triple J describing Aerial Love as “heading into electro soul territory”.
The radio station also reveals that the EP is a prelude to Daniel Johns’ first solo album, which Johns tells them “has been tracked and finished for a while” and is due out later this year.
“There’s a bit of genre-hopping going on but I think it’s all quite cohesive in that it’s really electronic and quite vocal-driven, whereas in the past I’ve tried to hide my vocals quite a bit,” he says.
Johns’ APRA Awards performance of Preach will be streamed live via Moshcam on Tuesday, 24th of March, while tickets for his Vivid LIVE performances at the Opera House go on sale to the general public on Friday, 27th March.
